That signal has an obvious driver: a new El Niño taking shape on top of the steady background warming from decades of greenhouse gas emissions. Oceans absorb something like 90% of the excess heat those emissions trap, which is part of why scientists tend to treat ocean temperature as a cleaner long-term signal than air temperature alone — it doesn't bounce around as much year to year, so when it moves, it usually means something real is happening underneath. And the pattern didn't stop at June. By July, NOAA reported the month had tied an all-time global heat record that had stood since the mid-1800s, with ocean temperatures landing just short of the single hottest reading ever recorded, which is still held by March 2024. Scientists studying the data expect 2026 to rank among the warmest years on record by the time El Niño fully plays out over the second half of the year.

The consequences don't stay contained to the water. Warmer oceans hand tropical storms more energy to work with and push more moisture into the atmosphere, which tends to show up later as heavier rainfall on land. They stress coral reefs and marine ecosystems that simply aren't built for sustained heat at this level. And separately from the well-known contribution of melting ice, warmer water itself takes up more physical space, which is part of what's driving sea level higher year over year.
